Say Cheese ! The Origin Of Cheese
Cheese and cheesemaking has been found on Egyptian tomb dating back over 4.000 years. In 2018, the discovery of the oldest known cheese from Egypt was reported by a team of archeologists from Cairo University and the University of Catania. Discovered in the Saqqara necropolis, it is around 3200 years old.
The invention of cheese was most likely discovered by accident during the transport of fresh milk in the organs of ruminants such as goats, sheep, cows and buffalo.
Evidence of early cheese production is prevalent in the Middle East, Europe and Central Asia. However it is unknown where precisely cheese production was first discovered
Cheese was made in many parts of the Roman Empire at its height and they introduced cheesemaking to England. During the Middle Ages cheese was made by the monks in monasteries across Europe, such as the Gorgonzola cheese.
Gorgonzola cheese was made in the Po Valley in Italy during 897 AD. In the 10th Century Italy became the cheesemaking center of Europe. Another example is the ancient records of Roquefort cheese that was mentioned in the monastery at Conques, France as early as 1070.
In 1815, the first cheese factory was built in Switzerland. Soon after that, scientists discovered how to mass produce cheese and industrial cheese production started to spread.
The making of cheese reached America in 1620 when the Pilgrims brought cheese to the New World. In 1851 the first cheese factory was built by Jeese Williams in Oneida County, New York.
In America, the food industry invented a way to produce cheese easier and cheaper, thus created the processed cheese as an alternative to natural cheese. Production of processed cheese increased drastically during the World War II era.
Since that time, Americans consume more processed cheese daily. Each year, more than one-third of all milk produced in the US currently is used to manufacture cheese.
