Another story is that the sword was obtained by Arthur with the advice of his wizard-adviser, Merlin. As a little boy, Arthur alone was able to pull out the sword out of a stone in which it had been magically put by Merlin. Excalibur sword was believed to hold ultimate power, whomever wields the sword will become a powerful king of England.

According to the legend, as Arthur was the only person able to pull the sword, he was the rightful heir to Britain in the 5th and 6th century. He was also the founder of the Knights of the Round Table. It was told that King Arthur made the table round so that none of his knights when seated at it could claim stronger over the others.

In the battle of Camlann, Arthur was hurt badly and he told Sir Bedivere to go to the magical lake and throw it into the water. According to the story, it has been lost since Arthur’s death. The Dozmary pool is said to be where Excalibur was thrown by.

To this day historians cannot confirm King Arthur’s existence. Some speculate that he was a warrior, who in reality, led British armies against Saxon invaders in the 6th century.

According to Wikipedia, one of the earliest names of King Arthur’s sword was Caladfwlch. A Welsh word that comes from Calad-Bolg (Hard Lightning). Later it was changed to Caliburn by Geoffrey of Monmouth. And due to French, today we know it as Excalibur.
