How The Shoes And Sandals Evolves
How the shoes and sandals evolves since thousand years ago to protect our feet and starting the footwear needs for human.
Shoes were invented because people needed a means to protect their feet and for use in ceremonial activities. Seems like footwear has been fashionable for rather a long time.
Humans evolved to walk without shoes like other animals. They wandered around savannas and jungle in search of food and shelter. Then they eventually figured out how to protect their feet from extreme temperature and sharp objects on the ground. The result was wrap their feet in animal hides.
New anthropological research suggests that humans started wearing shoes about 40.000 years ago. Toe bones from a cave in China revealed people were wearing shoes at the time. The earliest known shoes are sagebrush bark sandals. It was found in 1938 from 7000 or 8000 BC in Fort Rock Cave in Oregon, United states. It remains the oldest known footwear specimen.
Earliest forms of footwear were fabricated from bark, twine and other nature-made materials. In 2008, a 5.500 year old leather shoe was found in the Areni-1 cave located in the Vayots Dzor province of Armenia in excellent condition. It is a one-piece leather-hide shoe, the oldest piece of leather footwear in the world known to contemporary researchers.
During the Stone Age, footwear was likely to be made of a single piece of leather made from cowhide, deer or bear skin. The first sandals emerged in ancient Egypt. The simplest form of sandals were flip-flop that appeared in murals depicted with jewel designs worn by Pharaohs, originated in Ancient Egypt around 4000 BC. Oldest surviving flip-flop is on display in the British Museum currently and dates back to about 1500 BC.
The first sandals were made from palm leaves, papyrus fiber and raw leather. The earliest evidence dating from around the period of unification, about 5.100 years ago. Around 1550 BC Egyptians began making shoes from woven reeds. They are considered as the first civilization that made the first shoes. The discovery in Dishforth and Leeming in North Yorkshire, England suggests that ancient Romans wore socks with sandals at least 2.000 years ago.
At first there was no distinction between shoes made for left or right feet. Shoes and boots were made on straight lasts called straights. Without a sole designed specifically for the left or right foot, shoes were uncomfortable.
Shoemakers made shoes by making wooden lasts or blocks of foot-shaped wood carved into different sizes. It wasn’t until 1818 that the right shoes were invented. The first pair of right and left footed shoes were made in Philadelphia, United States. Until America’s Colonial era shoes were largely homemade.
The word “shoe” is from Old English scoh, it was derived from Proto-Germanic skokhaz. The old plural form shoon lasted until 16th century. In the 19th century the primary footwear was the boot.
Manufacturing shoes became a thing when Jan Ernst Matzelinger (1852-1889) invented a shoe making machine and brought significant change in producing shoes.
Some cultures requires you not to wear shoes inside house. Such as Germans with other like Japan, Russia, Korea, Turkey and other Eastern countries have the custom of removing shoes in homes. It also carries over to some African countries and a majority of the Middle East.
