Grand Design Of Petronas Twin Towers
Take a closer look at the grand design of Petronas Twin Towers, one of the tallest buildings in the world with grand architecture.
When visiting Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, there is only one attraction that you should not miss: the Petronas Twin Towers. Standing at an incredible height of 451.9 meters, the Twin Towers are the country’s number one architectural landmark and offer an interesting ‘true sight’. Petroliam Nasional Berhad or commonly known as Petronas is a Malaysian government-owned oil and gas company.
The Petronas Towers or Petronas Twin Towers buildings were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004 before being surpassed by the Burj Khalifa, Willis Tower and Taipei 101. However, the Petronas Twin Towers are still the tallest twin buildings in the world with 88 floors.
The initial construction was started on March 1, 1993. The buildings were designed by César Pelli and completed in 1998 after spending five years of construction building. The tower is built on the foundation of the Kuala Lumpur horse race. The inspiration for this tower is taken from geometric shapes in Islamic architecture.
The depth of the bedrock makes this building built with the deepest foundation in the world. The 120 meter deep foundation required a large amount of concrete to be built within 12 months (1 year) by Bachy Soletanche.
This uniquely styled tower is home to many of the world’s major corporations. Companies that inhabit the building include Petronas (main occupant), Microsoft, Al Jazeera, Boeing, Bloomberg, Reuters and Accenture.
Tower 1 was built by a Japanese consortium led by Hazama Corporation while Tower 2 was built by two South Korean contractors, namely Samsung C&T and Kukdong Engineering & Construction. Kukdong also built the bridge.
There bridge connecting the two towers on the 41st and 42nd floors, making it the tallest two-story bridge in the world. The bridge is not mounted directly on the main structure, instead it is designed to slide in and out of the tower so as not to fracture due to strong winds or seismic plate movement.
The bridge is located 170 meters (558 ft) from road level and is 58.4 meters (192 ft) long, while weighing 750 tons (750000 kg).
The Petronas air bridge is also reinforced with 2 “hanging bow” legs that are paired on each side, each one foot long is 51 meters locked to the 29th floor of each tower. Once built on land, the air bridge was lifted into place on the tower for three days in July 1995.
Beneath the building, there is a 17-acre (69000 m2) KLCC Park that provides paths for jogging and recreation, a fountain pool decorated with light shows, a wading pool, and a children’s playground. Suria KLCC is one of the largest shopping malls in Malaysia.
The legendary Argentine-American architect, Cesar Pelli who designed this majestic gigantic structure was destined to live forever through the rows of buildings he had been created. Even though he passed away on 19 July 2019, his extraordinary buildings creation will keep his name alive.
