What Is Futsal And The Story Behind
Get to know what futsal is and the story behind the sport that became very popular across South America and Asia.
Futsal is a sport that is similar to football in that it involves two teams. A soccer team requires the team to consist of 11 players, including the goalkeeper. As for futsal, one team consists of 5 players including the goalkeeper. Football and futsal are both played in two halves.
Quoted from the official FIFA website, futsal was first played in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1930, by Juan Carlos Ceriani. This futsal game was introduced when it started raining.
At the time, Ceriani was tired by the wet conditions of the pitch when it rained and the frequent cancellations of practice, not to mention the pitch became unusable. Finally, he decided to create a sport that can be played indoors.
The term “futsal” is an international term, derived from the Spanish or Portuguese words, futbol (soccer) and sala (indoor) while Puksal is the Latin name of Futsal.
The uniqueness of futsal received attention throughout South America, especially in Brazil. Pele, the Brazilian football superstar, for example, developed his talent in futsal.
Non-international futsal courts are 25 to 42 meters long and 16 to 25 meters wide. International futsal courts have different sizes from non-international ones. International futsal courts according to FIFA standards have a length of 38 to 42 meters with a width of 20 to 25 meters.
In futsal matches there are important rules that need to be considered. As per the official FIFA website, the final game time is 40 minutes per match. In 1 match, it is divided into 2 halves where each half is 20 minutes with a break that cannot be more than 15 minutes
In FIFA competitions (eg Futsal World Cup) or Regional Federations (eg AFC for Asia and UEFA for Europe), substitutions are usually limited to a maximum of 9 substitutions per match. This rule does not apply if there is a player on the pitch who want to take turns.
The length of the futsal goal is precisely 3 meters, 2 meters high, and 0.08 meters wide. In professional futsal, the match is divided into 2 rounds of 20 minutes each. Between the two halves there is a 15 minute break.
There are 5 basic futsal techniques to master :
- Kicking the Ball (Kick) Kicking is a basic technique that must be mastered by futsal players.
- Passing the ball.
- Dribbling
- Shooting into the Opponent’s Goal (Shooting)
- Heading the Ball (Heading)
The first Futsal World Championship was held with the help of FIFUSA (before its members joined FIFA in 1989) in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1982, ending with Brazil in first place.
The first international futsal match was held in the US in December 1985, at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California.
