OVERVIEW

Sydney is the largest city in Australia and the capital city of the state of New South Wales. Its inhabitants are called Sydneysiders. Some nicknames for Sydney including “the Harbor City”, “the City of Villages” and “the Emerald City”.

The city has hosted international sporting events, including the 1938 British Empire Games, the 2000 Summer Olympics and the 2003 Rugby World Cup final.

Sydney has one quality that makes it comparable to New York: it was a city where immigrants arrived and it was also bigger than the current capital. Sydney today can be called the cultural and economic capital of Australia although Canberra is the political capital. But the history of Sydney has been going on since the time of the development of the continent by Europeans.

THE FIRST SETTLERS

According to wikipedia, radiocarbon dating studies show that the Sydney area has been inhabited by Indigenous Australians for 30,000 years. The traditional indigenous inhabitants of Sydney Cove are the Cadigals, whose land stretches from south of Port Jackson to Petersham.

In 1770, British sea captain Lieutenant James Cook landed at Botany Bay on the Kurnell Peninsula. It was there that James Cook made his first contact with the Aboriginal people known as Gweagal.

Sydney is also known as Sin City, because of its exile “convict” past. Because of this past background, Sydneysiders are often referred to as “convicts”.

In 1788, a British ship came to the city of Sydney to dispose of the convicts and leave them there to die as punishment. However, fate said otherwise. Sydney actually rose to become a magnificent city. In the most recent census, 20% of Australians had a “convict” grandparent.

Population estimates prior to the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 remain uncertain, some 4,000 to 8,000 Aboriginal people settled in the Sydney area prior to contact with British settlers.

The first British colony in Sydney was founded at Sydney Cove by Arthur Phillip, commodore of the First Fleet. Located in a bay on the Tasman Sea, Sydney is built on a low hill around Port Jackson.

On July 20, 1842, the Municipal Council recognized Sydney as the first city in Australia, with John Hosking as the Mayor of Sydney.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Today, Sydney has 4.34 million inhabitants and an area of 12,000 square kilometers. This city has several tourist destinations including the Sydney Opera House and Harbor Bridge. The Sydney Harbor Bridge is the largest steel arch bridge in the world measuring 1,149 meters.

The Sydney Opera House has five theaters that can be used for various performances; home to Opera Australia, the world’s third-busiest opera company and the Sydney Symphony.

The magnificent Opera House can accommodate 3,000 shows per year. A surprising fact considering it was originally built to store tram trains.

The Harbor City – thus the nickname of this metropolitan city which is surrounded by national parks, and has many bays, rivers and inlets makes Sydney a beautiful city. You can meet parks such as Hyde Park, Royal Botanical Gardens and national parks.

For the climate, the city has a wet subtropical climate with warm summers and cold winters, and erratic rainfall throughout the year.
