HISTORY

Michael Dell, who was studying at the University of Texas, Austin, in 1984 founded a company PC’s Limited with an initial capital of $ 1000. The company, which was initially run from outside the campus area to be precise in a dorm room at the Dobie Center, had its initial goal of selling IBM-compatible computers assembled from supplied components.

Michael Dell conducts his business with the belief that selling computers directly to consumers can help PC’s Limited better understand consumer needs and be able to provide effective solutions to those needs.

In 1985, the company produced its first computer called the “Turbo PC”. The computer which is the result of its own design uses an Intel 8088-compatible processor and runs at a speed of 8 MHz and sold for $ 795.

The company dissolved PC’s Limited in 1987 to become Dell Computer Corporation and began expanding globally. In June 1988, Dell’s market capitalization grew from $30 million to $80 million from its June 22 initial public offering from 3.5 million shares to $8.50 per share.

In 1992, Fortune magazine included Dell Computer Corporation on its list of the world’s 500 largest companies, making Michael Dell the youngest CEO of a Fortune 500 company ever.

PROSPERITY ERA

From 1997 to 2004, Dell enjoyed steady growth and gained market share from competitors even during industry downturns. During the same period, competing PC vendors such as Compaq, Gateway, IBM, Packard Bell, and AST Research struggled and eventually either left the market or were bought out.

In 1999, Dell acquired Compaq and became the largest seller of Personal Computers in the United States with revenues of $25 Billion as of a January 2000 report. To complete expansion beyond computers, shareholders agreed to change the company name to “Dell Inc.” at the company’s annual meeting in 2003.

In 2003, the company changed its name to “Dell Inc.” to recognize the company’s expansion beyond computers.

In 2004, Michael Dell stepped down as CEO while retaining the Chairman position, passing the title of CEO to Kevin Rollins, who had been President and COO since 2001. Although no longer holding the title of CEO, Dell essentially served as de facto co-CEO with Rollins.
