facts about online degree programs

Online degree is an academic degree that can be achieved mostly using internet connection from a personal computer.  Taking an online degree is similar to take a degree program on campus, but you have the freedom arranging your own schedule.

Fully online degrees are earned from your own home without any visit to the college or university campus. No physical present is needed for this kind of education. Usually it is a college degree, but it could both high school diplomas and non-degree certificate programs as well.

Generally, online degree programs and courses are offered from the host college’s online learning platform. Some can be accessed using alternative technologies. The college or school lecturers will determine the format for each individual program and arrange the learning methods to give the best for the students.

The need for people to have flexible school schedules along with the increasing use of the internet worldwide have led to establishment of online colleges for various degrees in bachelor, master and doctoral.

Although online education is often similar to traditional campus curriculum, the programs can be delivered in a number of ways.

“The primary benefit of an online program is flexibility” – Robert Monroe

According to Robert Monroe, Director of the Online Hybrid MBA at Carnegie Mellon University‘s Tepper School of Business, the best online education programs actually mirror their on-campus equivalent. Distance learning is usually offered using one of these methods, or a combination of them:

  • 100% Online Education – Fully-online degrees are earned from your own home with no requirement to visit your college or university campus.
  • Hybrid Education – Hybrid education allows students to have a combination of both online and on-campus courses to obtain the degree.
  • Online Courses – Online courses may be part of a degree program, but these courses can also be taken on their own in order to master a certain subject or learn a specific skill needed. This will make the students have more focus on the subjects.
  • MOOCs – Massive Open Online Courses, are usually presented in lecture form to online “classrooms” to many students altogether at the same time. The students could be as many as 10,000 people.

Unfortunately, some people don’t consider online degree as a good education system. They assume that the degree won’t be taken seriously by employers, no challenge because the materials are too easy or this is not a ‘real’ degree because some institutions are not credited at regional and national levels.

Often, this is just a case of lack of information about what it’s really like to earn a degree via internet. The truth is, online instruction, online degrees and distance learning provide a highly flexible and creative way to complete your education with the freedom to arrange your schedule.
