In the province of Ontario, Canada you will find the Niagara Falls. The Niagara River separating Ontario from the New York State, forming a natural border with the USA.

The name Niagara itself comes from a native tribe called Onguiaahra, meaning “a thundering noise”. This name morphed into “Niagara” in the tongues of French explorers. The waterfall has become one of the most iconic landmarks in North America.

There are three different waterfalls that make up the Niagara Falls : the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls. In size and capacity, they rank among the biggest waterfalls in the world.

Furthermore, they are about 12.000 years old. All three waterfalls originate in the Niagara River, which stretches 36 miles from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. Niagara river flows at approximately 35 miles/hour (56.3 kilometers/hour).

The source of the water coming from the three Great Lakes (Superior, Huron, and Michigan) that drain into Lake Erie, which in turn drains into the Niagara River. The river then plummets into Lake Ontario via the Falls.

Total width of the falls is 1.2 kilometres. Because most waterfalls are thin and narrow, the massive width of the Niagara falls is the main difference. The water volume of the falls is 150,000 U.S. Gallons / 567,811 Liters per second, the speed reaches 109 kilometres per hour.

The water plunges 57 metres from the highest point on the ridge. The gorge located below is 11 kilometres long. The deepest point in the river is 51 metres, under the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side. Before 1886, the Falls at Niagara were the symbol of America and the New World. It changed when the Statue of Liberty was erected.

The movie “Niagara” from the 20th Century Fox studio, starring Marilyn Monroe was filmed in around Niagara Falls, Ontario in 1952.

The first documentation of the falls was recorded by Father Louis Hennepin, when he saw the falls during his expedition in 1678. After he returned to France and published a book, A New Discovery, he documented the overwhelming impression the falls made on him.

By the late 19th century the Niagara Falls area had become known as the Honeymoon Capital of the World. Today, more than 12 million people visit the Falls areas annually each summer.
