history of casio corporation
History of Casio Corporation began when Casio was founded as Kashio Seisakujo in April 1946 by Tadao Kashio in Mitaka, Tokyo, Japan after the World War 2. Tadao had three younger brothers, Toshio, Kazuo, and Yukio. They joined later and started producing calculators in 1949.
At that time most calculators used mechanical gears, there were none electronic circuits like today’s devices. The main type of calculator used in Japan was the hand-operated calculator, containing gears and a hand crank.
Electric calculators using a small motor to turn the gears had already appeared outside Japan before, but they could not be manufactured in domestically, because high level of technical expertise and special quality materials were needed in order to process the parts.
The biggest feature of the new invention was the adoption of the ten-key format. The calculators at that time used a “full keypad” with the numerals 0 to 9. Just like pocket calculators today, this newly developed relay-type calculator used only 10 number keys.
In June 1957, Casio Computer Co., Ltd. was formed. That year, Casio released the Model 14-A, the world’s first all-electric compact calculator, this model was based on relay technology. Casio also developed early digital cameras.
During the 1980’s and 1990’s, the company produced numerous affordable home electronic keyboards for musicians along with introducing the world’s first mass-produced digital watches.
The Casio’s budget electronic instruments and affordable home electronic keyboard became very popular. The company also became well known for producing wide variety and innovation of wristwatches.
Casio was one of the earliest manufacturers of quartz watches, both digital and analog. Along with calculator watches during this time.
Today, Casio is commonly known for making affordable and reliable electronic products.
The G-Shock range of shock-resistant watches is very popular. The original 1983 G-Shock DW-5000C is highly demanded by collectors.
