Overview Of Universal Studios And Theme Parks
The overview of Universal Studios and theme parks that included all their movies icons in amusement park worldwide.
Universal Pictures also known as Universal Studios was formed on April 30, 1912 in New York, United States by Henry Koster Carl Laemmle, a film exhibitor that turned to producer. Its studios are located in Universal City, California while the corporate offices are in New York City.
Its former name was Universal Film Manufacturing Company and Universal-International Pictures Inc. Besides Laemmle there were other founders including Mark Dintenfass, Charles O. Baumann, Adam Kessel, Pat Powers, William Swanson, David Horsley, Robert H. Cochrane, and Jules Brulatour.
The studio is the oldest surviving film studio in the United States and the fifth in the world after Gaumont, Pathé, Titanus, and Nordisk Film. It is also the oldest member of Hollywood’s “Big Five” studios. In 1962, the studio was acquired by MCA, which was re-launched as NBCUniversal in 2004.
Universal is a member of the Motion Picture Association (MPA), its total revenue in 2011 was $4.239 billion with operating income $27 million. Universal was one the majors studios during Hollywood’s golden age between 1910’s to 1960’s.
During the early years, Universal had a “clean picture” policy but Carl Laemmle considered this was a mistake in 1927 as other studios were generating more profit from “unclean pictures” while Universal was losing money.
Laemmle opened his 230-acre Universal City ranch, north of Los Angeles on March 15, 1915 to public. Visitors had the chance to walk around movie studio lot and watch the filming process.
The Universal Studios Hollywood was opened on July 15, 1964 along with the tram tour that took visitors circling around the studio’s movie set. More property from their movies are added to the park every year including the great white shark from the movie Jaws and the giant ape, King Kong.
The studios and theme park are located in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles County, California. It is one of the oldest and most famous Hollywood film studios still in use today.
Outside the theme park all NBCUniversal West Coast operations are gathered in one area such as KNBC, KVEA and NBC News with new digital facility.
In 1982 Universal considered the idea of opening an amusement park in Florida. They planned to build a larger, more attractive experience tour compared to their Studio Tour tram ride in Hollywood. This concept is to set it apart from Disney World.
Universal Studios Hollywood has two areas on different levels. They are connected by a series of escalators called the Starway. The areas are known as the Upper lot and Lower lot.
With the slogan “The Entertainment Capital of LA”, the park hosted 9.056 million guests in 2017 and ranked in 15th in the world and 9th among North American parks.
