The Eternal City : Thousand Years History OF Rome

The Eternal City : thousand years history of Rome describes the amazing stories of the city dates back from ancient times.

The history of Rome spans more than two thousand five hundred years. Although Roman mythology dates the founding of Rome to around 753 BC, the site was inhabited long before, making it one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in Europe.

It was first called The Eternal City by the Roman poet Tibullus in the 1st century BC. Besides that Rome is also called “Caput Mundi” (Capital of the World).

The city of Rome began as a small village in the Palatine and Aventine hills. It is said that Romulus was the first king of Rome. According to legend, Romulus is a descendant of the Trojan hero, Aeneas, who migrated to Latium (Italy) after the fall of Troy.

On April 21, 753 BC, Romulus and Remus founded the city of Rome. In Roman mythology, these two twins were cared for by a male wolf until they became adults. They were the children of a Vesta Virgin named Rhea Silvia and the god Mars.

In the 8th century BC, the Etruscans (Etruria), invaded the Latins in the region of Rome. They established the Roman Empire ruled by a King who served as warlord and supreme judge. The history of the Roman Empire began with the founding of the city and ended after the overthrow of the kings and the establishment of the Republic in 509 BC.

At that time Roman society consisted of two groups, namely the Patricia (nobles) and the Plebeia (small people). The last king of the Roman Empire was Tarquinius.

The Renaissance period changed the face of Rome dramatically, with works of art such as Pietà by Michelangelo and the various frescoes in the Borgia Apartments. Rome reached its peak during the period of Pope Julius II (1503–1513) and Pope Leo X and Pope Clement VI of his successors, both members of the Medici family.

In 1861, Rome was declared as the capital of Italy although it was still under papal control. During the 1860s, the last remnants of the Church State came under French protection thanks to Napoleon III’s foreign policy.

It was only after the protection was lifted in 1870, due to the Franco-Prussian War, that Italian troops were able to capture Rome by entering the city through an assault near Porta Pia. After that, Pope Pius IX declared himself a prisoner in the Vatican and, in 1871, the Italian capital was finally moved from Florence to Rome.
