Cars have changed the way people live all over the world. It made easier for people to travel around with greater personal freedom and access to jobs and services.
The word “car” is believed to originate from Latin carrus/carrum “wheeled vehicle” or Old North French-Middle English carre meaning “two-wheeled cart”. Both derive from Gaulish karros “chariot.” It referred to any wheeled horse-drawn vehicle like a cart, carriage, or wagon.
The first car in the world was born when a German inventor, Karl Benz (1844-1929) invented the first gas-powered car in 1885. On January 29, 1886 Benz applied for a patent for his vehicle. The patent with number 37435 is regarded as the birth certificate of automobile. In July 1886 the newspapers wrote about the first public appearance of the three-wheeled Benz Patent Motor Car. The first person to drive a car over a long distance is Bertha Benz, the Karl Benz’ wife in 1888.
Benz invention of the car was inspired from his desire to create this vehicle. His three-wheeled automobile could carry two passengers and he called it Motorwagen. It was the first true, modern automobile. Most historians agree that Benz invented the automobile, though a number of people also did projects like him at the time.
Although the automobile was first invented in Germany and France in the late 1800’s Americans were quickly dominated the automotive industry in the first half of the 20th century.
In the early 20th century, cars became widely accessible to the masses when Ford Motor Company from United States, manufactured the Model T in 1908. It was one of the first cars that went through mass production process in the industry. In 1929, Ford built its first woody car, utilized both wood and steel to create the frames and bodies.
A common myth is that Henry Ford invented the car. It’s not true. What he did was invented a new way to manufacture a large number of vehicles. The method was the moving assembly line.
Today there are more than 1 billion cars currently in use on Earth, about 165.000 cars are produced every day. They burn over a trillion liters of gasoline and diesel fuel yearly, consuming about 50 EJ (about 300 terawatt hours) of energy.
