the exotic ujung kulon national park

Ujung Kulon National Park is located in the southwest of Java, Indonesia’s most populated island and part of the district of Pandeglang, province of Banten. To the east of the park there is Gunung Honje ridge which runs north-south, rises up to 620 m. At the southern end joins a peninsula to the west.

Located at the opposite of Krakatau Volcano on the Java side, the Ujung Kulon National Park is Indonesia’s first national park. The park area covers 76.214 hectares and is mostly flat. It is the largest lowland rainforest in Java with grasslands and mangrove forests. UNESCO listed the park as a World Heritage in 1991. Due to rare human interference the park has a very well preserved ecosystem of flora and fauna.

There are five kinds of rhinos in the world : the white and black rhino in Africa and the Indian, Javanese and Sumatran rhinos found in Asia.
The rare Javanese rhino can only be found in the Ujung Kulon National Park these days. The park is the last sanctuary of the one-horned Javan Rhinoceros, one of the world’s most endangered mammals. There are only around 60 Javan Rhinos left in the world today, poaching and the reduction of habitat has brought this animal to the brink of extinction.

This species is extremely rare and its presence is very hard to find. Many locals consider the mammal as a sacred animal in the area. Ujung Kulon national park is the only place on the world where they can breed naturally.

There are also over 72 species of reptiles and amphibians roaming the national park such as Banteng (bull), Owa Jawa monkeys, Dhole/wild dog (Cuon alpinus javanicus), Silvery gibbon, Javan lutung, long-tailed macaque, Javan leopard, Java mouse-deer/kancil, Rusa (deer) and many more. Around 270 species of birds found in Ujung Kulon and populatingĀ  the park, choosing the site as their home.

The climate is tropical with temperatures around 25 and 30 Ā° C and very high humidity : 80-90%. The rainy season is from October to April and brings with high rainfall (400 mm in December and January). The driest months are between July and September and consider as the best time to explore the park.
