the history of golf from time to time
The history of golf are actually unclear and debated. But it is generally accepted that modern golf developed from Scotland. It was a game played on the eastern coast in an area close to the Edinburgh, the royal capital.
Older record of golf dates back to the time of Julius Caesar during the Roman empire. It was not like the golf the way we play today, but it was a similar game called paganica. They played the game by striking a feather-stuffed ball with club-shaped tree branches.
The paganica spread throughout Europe during the 1st century BC as the Roman conquered much of the Blue continent. Other historians trace the sport back to a game played in China during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) called chuiwan. But neither theory is convincing.
So far, the most reliable history of golf can be traced back to Scotland in 1457. King James II of Scotland outlawed the game then as it detracted from the training for the military in 1491.
According to Maggie Lagle, a historian at the United States Golf Association, the word “golf” was derived from the Dutch kolf or kolve meaning “club”. But in Scottish dialect of the late 14th and early 15th century the Dutch term became goof or gouff. Then in the 16th century the word “golf” appeared like we know it today – from the golf.com website.
In 1860, the first British Open had taken place and it is still played today. As the popularity of the sport began to spread worldwide, the first golf club in North America was founded in Montreal, Canada in 1873.
Golf took a firm place in England when the Royal North Devon Golf Club was established in 1864, following the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in 1869 at Hoylake.
America began to embrace the golf fever as well. The first 18-hole course in the United States was in the Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Illinois, 1893.
The USGA (United States Golf Association) was founded in 1894, followed by the current governing body of today, the PGAA (Professional Golf Association of America) in 1916.
Both amateurs and professionals golf players are allowed to play in open events like the US Open and the British Open because the tournaments are “open” to the public.
In 1981, the professional circuit name was officially changed to Tournament Players Association (TPA) Tour. The name was changed again to its current name of the Professional Golfers Association or the PGA tour.
