Here is a brief tale of Nissan automobiles, a long journey of innovation and excellent quality.
Nissan Motor Corporation is a Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer that sells their vehicles under the Nissan, Infiniti and Datsun brands.
Nissan was founded on December 26, 1933 by Masujiro Hashimoto, Kenjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama, Meitaro Takeuchi, Yoshisuke Aikawa and William R. Goham. Nishi-ku, Yokohama is their current headquarter with around 136.134 employees in 2020.
Until 1983, Nissan automobiles were sold under Datsun brand for export markets. Then in 1985 the Datsun brand was completely dropped and Nissan brand was used. In July 2013 the Datsun brand was relaunched to enter the targeted markets.
In 1999, Nissan was having financial difficulties and formed an alliance with Renault of France. The agreement with Renault was signed on March 27, 1999. Then Mitsubishi Motors of Japan joined in 2016 thus the name became Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.
The alliance of Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi was the world’s fourth largest automaker in 2013 with sales of 8.266.098 units worldwide. Nissan was the world’s largest electric vehicle in 2018 and the largest car manufacturer in North America in 2014.
The name Nissan was taken from an abbreviation during the 1930’s that being used on the Tokyo Stock Exchange for Nihon Sangyo. On June 1, 1934, the Tokyo-based Jidosha-Seizo Kabushiki-Kaisha (Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd.) changes to a new name: Nissan Motor Company.
The name was from the Nissan zaibatsu, now called Nissan group. Zaibatsu is a Japanese term for powerful industrial and financial business conglomerates in the Japan Empire who had big control over Japanase economy from Meiji restoration period until the end of World War II.
During the 1950’s Nissan started to expand into worldwide markets. They began to enter western markets such as Datsun and the world’s largest car market, The United States. Nissan knew their small Datsun car would fill the void in such countries. By 1970, Nissan had become one of the world’s largest automobiles exporters.
In the early 1980’s, Nissan (Datsun) had been the best selling Japanese brand in Europe. To reduce the tax and production costs, Nissan decided to build a plant in Sunderland, England. Completed in 1986 as the subsidiary Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd., this plant was producing 400.000 vehicles annually in 2007 and held the title of the most productive plant in Europe.
