A Brief Timeline Of Scout Movement
Let’s learn about a brief timeline of Scout movement that spreads globally and becoming international organization.
The history of the founding of World Scouts began on July 25, 1907, when Baden Powell, who at that time served as Lieutenant General of the British military, held a scout camp on Brownsea Island, England. Since childhood, Baden Powell is known to pay attention to the outdoors and likes to explore the forest around his school.
Powell recorded his experiences in the book Scouting for Boys in 1908. The book was deliberately made as a guide in the camp events he pioneered. In 1916, the Scout organization was founded for the standby age. The organization was named CUB (wolf cub).
The idea for the movement emerged when Baden-Powell and his troops fought to defend the city of Mafeking, South Africa, from Boer attacks. At that time, his army was much less than the Boer army. To outsmart him, a group of young men are formed and trained to become volunteer soldiers. Their main task is to help the military defend the city. They get easy tasks but important like delivering a message given by Baden-Powell to all members of the military in the city.
They were able to complete the job so well that Baden-Powell’s troops could defend the city of Mafeking for several months. In recognition of their success, each member of the volunteer army was given a badge. The image of this badge was later used as the logo of the international Scout movement.
The Scout Movement is a youth development movement that has a worldwide influence. The scouting movement consists of various youth organizations, both for men and women, whose aim is to train the participants physically, mentally and spiritually and to encourage them to carry out positive activities in society.
The first Scout Parade was held at Crystal Palace, London in 1910. The parade attracted the interest of young people in England. No less than 10,000 young men and women were interested in joining the scouting activities. In 1910 Argentina, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Singapore, Sweden, and the United States were recorded as having scouting organizations.
In Indonesia scouting has existed in for more than 100 years. The Scout Organization itself entered Indonesia during the Dutch colonial period. Scouting in Indonesia began with the emergence of a Dutch branch, namely theĀ NederlandscheĀ Padvinders Organisatie (NPO) in 1912. After Indonesia’s independence the Scout organization in Indonesia is called Pramuka (Praja Muda Karana). The Scout Movement Organization or Pramuka was officially introduced in Indonesia on August 14, 1961.
The father of Indonesian Scouts is Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX. The symbol of this movement is the shadow of a coconut shoot. The symbol was created by Soenardjo Atmodipuro, because he thought that all parts of the coconut tree were useful. It is hoped that with the symbol, the scouts can provide many benefits for themselves and the surrounding environment.
Scouts have 3 characteristics, namely national, international and universal. The Scout Movement is a complementary and supplementary organization of education.
According to Wikipedia as of 2005, there were more than 28 million registered members of men’s scouting and 10 million registered members of women’s scouting worldwide from 216 different countries and territories.
