Pirelli & C. SpA is a tyre manufacturer based in Milan, Italy. It is the 7th largest tyre manufacturer after Bridgestone, Michelin, Goodyear, MRF, Continental, Sumitomo and Hankook.

The company was founded in Milan in 1872 by Giovanni Battista Pirelli. They specialised in rubber and derivative processes and scuba diving equipment.
In 1974, the Lancia rally racing team requested for a tyre strong enough to handle the power of the new Lancia Stratos and Pirelli answered with the “wide radial type” in 1975. At the time racing tyres were either slick tyres or radial tyres.

Both types were unsuitable for Lancia Stratos as the radials would damage within 10 km and the slicks too stiff. The wide tyre from Pirelli has a reduced sidewall height like a slick but with the structure like radial. The type of this tyre was considered the best for Lancia Stratos and later on Porsche started using the same tyres with the Porsche 911 Turbo.
