ETYMOLOGY
Paris’ Latin name was Lutetia, or Lutetia Parisiorum, which was later truncated to just Paris. The name is derived from the Gallic Parisii tribe, whose name may be of Celtic Gallic origin, meaning “large kettle”, but it is unrelated.

The reason for giving this name is entirely political. It was taken from the word Civitas Parisiorum, meaning city of the Parisii tribe, they were the main tribes who settled in this city from the Celts and Romans who were later referred to as the Parisians.

The earliest archaeological signs of a permanent settlement in Paris date back to 4200 BC. The Parisii, a Celtic sub-tribe of the Senones, known as a people of merchants, inhabited the area near the river Seine since 250 BC. The Romans conquered the Paris basin around 52 BC, with a permanent settlement by the end of the same century on the Left Bank Sainte Geneviève Hill and the Île de la Cité.

The Parisii, both of Celtic and Roman descent, at that time adhered to pagan beliefs. Parisians worship trees, mountains and hang animal heads as sacrifices in public. This belief continued even though Paris was led by a Roman emperor who embraced Christian teachings.

This is evident from the letter Gregory, Bishop of Rome sent to the Queen of the Franks in 586 AD who complained about reports from travelers that the natives of Paris still did not follow Church discipline, and even some Christians still worshiped Satan.
