brief summary of hockey

Hockey is a sport where players play against each other trying to deliver the ball into the opponent’s net using a stick. Here is a brief summary of hockey.

Origin of hockey evolved from games played in Egypt 4.000 years ago, the carvings feature teams with sticks and a projectile. In Ethiopia around 1.000 BC, some ancient form of the game was also played in Iran around 2.000 BC.

In the modern day there are many types of hockey such as field hockey, ice hockey, bandy and rick hockey. In Canada, United States and Russia, hockey usually refers to ice hockey while in the rest of the world the term hockey refers to field hockey.

The word “hockey” itself is coming from unknown origin. Some suggest it is derivative of hoquet, a Middle French word for a shepherd’s stave. The “hooked” end of the stick has similarity to the hockey stick. Another theory suggests the word comes from the use of cork bungs (stoppers) from barrels containing “hock” ale, also called “hocky”.

According to wikipedia website, the first recorded use of the word hockey is in the 1773 book Juvenile Sports and Pastimes, to Which Are Prefixed, Memoirs of the Author: Including a New Mode of Infant Education by Richard Johnson (Pseud. Master Michel Angelo), whose chapter XI was titled “New Improvements on the Game of Hockey”

Field hockey is played on gravel or natural grass and the governing body is the International Hockey Federation (FIH). Men’s field hockey has been played in each Summer Olympic Games since 1908 while for women it has been played since 1980.

In England in the mid-late 19th-century, modern field hockey emerged with the first formal men’s hockey club, formed in 1861, the ‘Blackheath Football and Hockey Club’. The rules were formalized by a new Hockey Association in London in 1886.

Ice hockey is played on a large flat area of ice using a vulcanized rubber disc called “puck”. The governing body of this sport is International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). Men’s ice hockey has been played at the Winter Olympics since 1924, and was in the 1920 Summer Olympics. Women’s ice hockey was added to the Winter Olympics in 1998.

Research reveals that organized ice hockey games were first played on skates in England and the earliest rules were also established in England. However, the ice hockey game was developed in Canada, especially on Montreal. The first indoor game was held on March 3, 1875. Today, Canada is the country that most closely-associated with hockey.
