The Long Development Of Toothbrush
The long Development of toothbrush dates back from 3500 BC when Egyptians used ancient form of toothbrush to clean their teeth.
Toothbrush is one of our daily tools today. We clean our teeth regularly at least twice a day. But what’s the story with this little cleaning instrument ? Let’s find out about it.
During prehistoric time, it is known that early humans generally had few cavities, this was due to their meals that were heavy on the meat and light on carbs, carbohydrate-free diet. They chewed sticks to clean their teeth and used grass stalks to pick in between teeth. Cavities caused by flourished bacteria in the human mouth, producing acids that in turn eat away the teeth. As a matter of fact, prehistoric humans had much better teeth than people today according to archaeologists.
The first form of toothbrush was developed around 3500 BC by the Babylonians and the Egyptians. It was some kind of a frayed twig which created the bristles. It is considered as the oldest oral hygiene artifacts on record. Some tombs in the ancient Egyptians contained these tooth-sticks alongside their owners.
Around 1600 BC the Chinese created sticks from aromatic trees twigs to make their breath fresh. But historians say that the world’s oldest known actual formula for toothpaste was created by the Egyptians too. It was a mix of mint, dried flowers, crushed rock salt and pepper to create an abrasive powder. The toothpaste in tube was introduced in 1896, pioneered by Kalodont, Johnson & Johnson (Zonweiss) and Sheffield.
Another origin of toothbrush in Chinese can be traced back that dates to the Tang Dynasty (619 – 907 AD) when their early toothbrushes had a handle made of bone or bamboo. Along with the bristles from the coarse bristles from Siberian hogs.
Before dentistry existed, people used tools shaped into tiny blades to scrape out the rotten areas. It was a little tiny rock, chipping and sanding it down until it had sharp edges. Then it was used to digging out a painful area of your tooth.
Today, humans are commonly have weak teeth. Why is that happen ? Part of the reason for our decreasing oral health issues is due to evolution. Our ancestors used to grow a lot longer, bigger and stronger jawbones. This was used to grind down hard and strong things like meat, raw vegetables and roots.
Animals teeth do not decay because they do not eat cooked food. Unlike humans, most animals, especially those living in the wild, eat raw food from nature. This protect their teeth with protection from tooth decay because they are not consuming foods that are heavy on refined sugar.
Around 1780, William Addis of Clerkenald, England made the first modern toothbrush. He created the tool from a bone left behind from his dinner and combined bristles to create the toothbrush to clean his teeth.
In 1938, nylon bristles were introduced by the company Dupont de Nemours. The first nylon toothbrush was called Doctor West’s Miracle Toothbrush.
A Swiss dentist, Philippe Guy, invented a true electric brush in 1959. He named his invention the Broxodent.
Whatever kind of food you eat, always remember to brush your teeth. If you don’t brush it you’ll get plaque which breaks down your tooth enamel. It will cause bad breath and can cause major problems known as periodontal disease. A condition when bacteria in plaque cause swollen and bleeding gums.
