A Long Way Of Denon History
A long way of Denon history, for more than 110 years Denon has produced many high quality electronics consumer goods for audio and video.
Denon is a Japanese electronics company founded in 1910 by Frederick Whitney Horn, an American businessman. The brand of Denon was a result of a merger of Denki Onkyo (not to be confused with other Onkyo) and other in 1939.
The sonxpluschambly.com website writes that at the beginning of his career in 1896, Horn was a Yokohama-based importer of recording equipment and machine tools for making recording tubes.
One thing led to another and in 1907 he decided to establish a business manufacturing recording equipment and producing “records”. Later, in 1909, he pioneered the development of records by setting up a factory for this purpose. And not just that, he even opened a recording studio to fully integrate his commercial offer.
The company was originally founded in 1910 as part of Nippon Chikuonki Shokai (Japan Recorders Corporation), a manufacturer of single-sided records and gramophones. The company was originally named Nippon Denki Onkyō Kabushigaisha (Japanese Electric Sound Company), which was later shortened to Denon.
A number of mergers and tie-ins over the next few decades happened, the company merged with Japan-US Recorders Manufacturing in 1912 at first and then in 1928 the brand “Columbia” was introduced when the company became “Japan Columbia Recorders”.
According to the Denon official website, in 1944 the company officially became Japan Denki Onkyo Co., Ltd. and its recording technology went on to claim its place in history, when a Denon machine, the DP-17K, was used to record a speech by Emperor Hirohito. It was the first time the Japanese public had heard the Imperial voice.
In 1946 Denon became a subsidiary of record company Nippon Columbia and by 1948 its R-23-A disc recorder/player was adopted as a standard by NHK, and installed in the company’s studios across Japan.
The Denon brand was first established in 1947 when Nippon Columbia merged with Japan Denki Onkyo. D&M Holdings Inc. was founded in May 2002 when Denon Ltd and Marantz Japan Inc. join. On March 1, 2017, Sound United LLC completed the acquisition of D+M Holdings.
Decades later, Denon is involved in the early stages of digital audio technology development, while specializing in the manufacture of high-fidelity consumer and professional audio equipment.
Denon today is considered as one of the best audio-video electronic peripheral makers. The brand is a high quality product with a range of prices – both budget and high-end.
The production of Denon products still exist at Denon’s own factory in Shirakawa, Japan, more than 55 years after its first appearance. To mark their 110 anniversary, they created the special 110 Anniversary cartridge, the DL-A110.
