Brief History And Invention Of Umbrella
A simple tool for everyday use that has been around for about 4.000 years ago in human civilization.
The umbrella was invented about 4.000 years ago and the first umbrellas were designed to provide shade from the Sun. It was probably invented by the Chinese but evidence of using the tool can be seen in ancient art of the same period in early civilizations such as Egypt, Assyria and Greece as well.
The earliest known parasols in Ancient Egyptian art date back to the Fifth Dynasty, around 2450 BC. The parasol is found in many kind of shapes.
Usually, the umbrella symbolizes the canopy of the heavens, shelter and protection. The parasol is a symbol of the SUN and an umbrella is a symbol of the shade. It is often an emblem of power and dignity.
In ancient Greece and Rome some umbrellas-like items were already used. In Rome they were called umbraculum. Umbraculum was made of leather and was used by women who wanted to protect themselves from the intense sun ray or keep their valued white (unburned) complexion.
The name itself was borrowed from the Italian word “ombrella”, a modification of the Latin word umbella which is a diminutive of umbra, means ‘shadow or shade”.

Most umbrella today is made of silk, acetate, rayon and nylon to make rain-and-sun resistant fabrics. Transparent umbrellas may be made from vinyl plastic and still water-proof. Outer sheaths may be made from the same material as the canopy or from leather or plastic. The larger the canopy the more susceptible it is to the wind.
Today according to the hfumbrella.com website, there are two main categories of umbrellas : Straight umbrellas and Folding Umbrellas. Straight umbrellas are a type of non-collapsible parasol, which is similar to the traditional style of umbrellas that you can find in classic films.
In a folding umbrella, there is 2-fold, 3-fold, 4-fold and 5-fold style. The 3 folded umbrella is the most common while the 5 folded is the shortest. They are easily foldable and can fit into a handbag or glove compartment.
