Lighten Up History Of Candles is a brief story of candles and the development of the tools that had lighten up humans life for centuries.
Candle is a source of light that consists of an axis covered by solid fuel, where the wax used is also a material from nature that is beeswax. Candles have long history in development. The Egyptians and Cretans made candles from beeswax, around 3000 BC. In the fourth century BC there were clay candle holders in Egypt.
Evidence of candles being used since the Qin Dynasty is the discovery of wax residue in the tomb of Qin Shi Huang (259-210 BC), the first Emperor of the Qin Dynasty. Since then, candles have become one of the prima donna of lighting until now.
Prior to the 19th century, the fuel used was usually beef tallow (which contains a lot of stearic acid). Now what is usually used is paraffin. Before the invention of electric lighting, candles and oil lamps were commonly used for lighting.
To light a candle, a heat source, usually from a flame or a match, is used to light the wick of the melted wax and vaporize the wax fuel little by little. After vaporizing, the fuel combines with oxygen in the atmosphere to form a constant flame. This flame provides enough heat to keep the candle burning until the fuel runs out.
The most common traditional ingredient found in candle making and is still a popular one today is the paraffin. It is best used by beginners because it melts quickly, is inexpensive, and is easy to color or scent.
Paraffin is the general name for alkane hydrocarbons with the formula CnH2n+2. Paraffin wax refers to solids with n=20–40. Paraffin is mostly used as a substitute if there is no stove/fuel. For instance, the chemical is used to light a fire when camping to heat or cook food.
Paraffin is a mixture of wax used to form wax as well as fuel for the wax. Paraffin is a very common wax and is a white or colorless soft solid in form. It is derived from petroleum, coal or oil shale, consisting of a mixture of hydrocarbon molecules containing between twenty and forty carbon atoms.
Another variant of candles today is the aromatherapy candles. They are candles with added fragrance which is suitable for use when you are tired or need relaxation because the aroma can make you calm.
In addition to the many aroma choices, how to use it is very easy. However, many studies reveal that the use of scented candles can actually harm the health of residents of the house in a long term. Chemicals in scented candles that can interfere with fertility are phthalates.
Other ingredient for candle is the palm wax. It is made from coconut fruit and refined into organic and chemical-free wax that is relatively safe to use anywhere and anytime.
