Unsolved Mystery Of The Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines is one of the biggest mysteries in ancient civilization world. The geoglyphs hold many kind of drawings from simple lines to complex objects.

The Nazca lines are a series of geoglyphs located in the Sechura Desert, specifically in the Nazca Desert, an area more than 80 km long between the cities of Nazca and Palpa in Peru. These geoglyphs are thought to have been created by the Nazca culture between 200 BC and 700 AD.

The Nazca lines themselves only started to become widely discussed in the 1920s, starting from the story of airplane passengers passing through the Nazca area, claiming to see faint lines forming various forms of living things with large dimensions. The 1920s marked a new era in commercial aviation in the Americas.

There are hundreds of drawings, from simple to complex, such as pictures of birds, spiders, monkeys, fish, sharks, llamas and lizards. This is one of the places in the world that is still shrouded in mystery. Many questions arise about its origins.

It is not known for certain who composed the Nazca lines. The main theory is that the Nazca civilization made them, using simple tools and technology.

This theory is supported by the discovery of ceramics and wooden pegs at several ends of the line. In addition, some researchers, such as Joe Nickell of the University of Kentucky, have recreated these lines with technology roughly available at the time of the Nazca civilization, without air support.

There are more than 800 straight lines, 300 geometric figures, and 70 animal and plant designs, which are also called biomorphs, works that take the form of living things. Some straight lines stretch up to 30 miles, while the biomorphs range from 50 to 1,200 feet in length, the same length as the Empire State Building.

Experts estimate that the lines made more than 2,000 years ago or around 700 AD are part of the Nazca culture, a civilization that is 200 years older than the Inca civilization. They made artistic designs and then ancient artists of the time drew straight lines according to those designs in the Peruvian desert.

Interestingly, the Nazca Lines can only be seen from space, aka from an airplane. Although in the era of the creation of the lines, of course there were no planes. So, in a sense, those who created the Nazca Lines cannot see or enjoy their works.

According to the researchers, local residents at that time made it by scraping the ground as deep as 30 cm. The contour of the land itself is suitable for scraping and the marks will not disappear due to hot temperatures, rare erosion and very little rainfall.

Unsolved Mystery Of The Nazca Lines

So far, the 3 answers why the Nazca Lines were made are for god worship, for astronomy and made by aliens.

Most recently, researchers from Hokkaido University (a university in Japan) published research results on the Nazca Lines in the ‘Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports’. They focused their research on bird-shaped outlines.

In total, there are 16 geoglyphs depicting birds. By studying the pictures of the birds and comparing them with the world’s birds, the birds of the Nazca Lines are long-tailed hummingbirds, pelicans and rainforest birds such as parrots.

In addition, some time ago archaeologists discovered the Nazca Lines depicting a giant cat. The image of the big cat was carved into an arid hillside in southern Peru more than 2,000 years ago. This geoglyph measures 37 meters and is part of the Nazca Lines in the highlands near Lima, the capital of Peru.

In 1994, UNESCO named the Nazca lines a world heritage site. According to UNESCO, the Nazca lines are thought to have been drawn from 500 B.C. to 500 A.D., and served as an astronomical ritual for their creators. This area has long been of interest to historians. Archaeologist Toribio Mejia Xesspe first discovered the mysterious lines carved into the landscape in 1920.
