The Curly History Of Comb

Comb as a simple modern day tool for human has been around very long, for about 6.000 years ago in our civilization.

A comb is a tool made of a hard material, usually flat, toothed, and used to style hair, straighten and clean it, or for use with other fibers.

ORIGIN
The comb is a tool that has long been known to mankind. Actually, the comb has been a human civilization since 6,000 years BC. This is evidenced by the discovery of this object in ancient tombs in Egypt that are more than 6,000 years BC.

In the tomb found ancient combs are generally made of animals, wood, silver, tin or brass. Combs in the BC era, made from tortoise shell horns, bones, elephant tusks and also various metals.

In the ancient Chinese civilization, combs were used as a sign of social class. During the Tang Dynasty, women’s preferred hairstyles were those that put their hair together like an ‘elaborate structure on the forehead’ while wealthy women wore ornaments, combs, pearl necklaces, face powder, and perfumes.

Comb has also been found in its highly developed form in settlements dating to about 5000 years ago in Persia — possibly at the height of the first major Indo-European migrations.

MODERN INNOVATIONS
In the 14th to 16th centuries luxurious combs with various decorations were created, which were usually worn by nobles. Entering the 17th century and after, the comb was sometimes used by women as ornaments. And the comb experienced rapid progress in the 18th century, at which time the comb became a lucrative home industry commodity.

Then John Wesley Hyatt, came up with one of the first usable plastics, celluloid. In 1878, he was awarded a patent – one of many he would receive in his lifetime – for ‘improvements in the manufacture of combs from celluloid’.

Entering 1869 the comb experienced a new design with the discovery of the use of plastic to make combs. Where thanks to the use of plastic, making combs is easy and cheap. It is at this stage that a comb industry occurs. Where combs are no longer produced in homes but in large factories with a lot of production.

During the 1930s and 1940s, when the fashion field was getting sophisticated, decorative hair combs emerged as the accessory of choice.

TYPES OF COMBS
In general, there are three types of combs that are widely used. First the hair comb, which is used to organize and style the hair. Two, decorative combs. This comb is used as a hair decoration but not for styling hair, this decorative comb was popular in the 1930s to the 1940s. Third, there is a lice comb, this comb is usually used to look for parasites in our hair, such as lice.

COMBING HAIR TECHNIQUE
The function of combing hair is to distribute the oil produced by the scalp to the ends of the hair. And combing your hair 100 times can actually help make your hair thicker and healthier.

Combing hair carelessly can actually cause hair to tangle, break, and cause hair loss. Furthermore, differences in hair types also affect the selection of the right type of comb.

For almost all hair types, the best time to brush is before you wash your hair. Comb your hair to straighten the tangled part of the hair shaft first so you don’t have to comb your hair after shampooing in a wet condition so as to prevent hair damage.

A 2001 book on hair care, Curly Girl (authors: Lorraine Massey, Deborah Chiel), recommends using a wooden comb with wide teeth rather than a hairbrush and plastic comb with tight teeth. The authors note that wooden combs do not create static and are less likely to cause hair to break or tangle..
